The AutoCamp X Suite doesn’t get enough respect. Check social media or online news and travel sites, and all the focus is on the custom Airstream. As of November 1, AutoCamp Catskills is taking down the tents for winter, and it’s likely Cape Cod, Russian River, and possibly Yosemite would be doing the same.
That begs the question: should you book the Airstream or the X Suite? We think there are 4 good reasons to go with the X Suite this winter.
Update!
After staying in an X Suite, we found even MORE reasons to choose an X Suite for your next AutoCamp Stay!
The official description of the AutoCamp X Suite
AutoCamp Cape Cod defines the X Suite as having “The most space, with the best panoramic views.”
These modern accommodations have
- a private bedroom with a queen memory foam mattress, wardrobe, and picture window over the bed
- a spa-inspired bathroom with a walk-in shower
- kitchen with an electric stovetop, microwave, mini refrigerator, and all tableware and BBQ utensils.
- living area that comes complete with flat screen TV and sofa, which folds out into a soft double bed.
As is the case with all AutoCamp camp sites, you get an outdoor fire pit and dining area right beside your room.
The realistic description of the AutoCamp X Suite
The X Suite appears to be the size and dimension of a shipping container, with a modern style and angle roof. This is a great example of “tiny living”!
Have a look at a few non-AutoCamp examples of shipping containers used for tiny houses:
Livinginacontainer.com highlights “the world’s best shipping container projects.”
They have some examples that resemble the AutoCamp X Suite.
Note how the bed is against the wall. AutoCamp X Suites are narrow. The bed is also appears to be against the wall. However, when I inquired, I was told both sides of the bed are accessible and have nightstands. This is an important consideration when deciding to book the X Suite over the AIrstream, which has nightstands and good walking space around each side of the queen sized bed.
Reasons to Choose the X Suite
The “Custom Airstream” option is how AutoCamp got started, and it’s still the biggest draw for AutoCamp. However, there are times when staying in the X Suite is a smarter lodging choice.
1. When it’s very cold outside.
Sure, it seems really romantic and charming to be in an Airstream during a snowstorm, but the reality is – it’s an aluminum skin. You’ll be pumping the heat non-stop. That’s be drying to your skin. Also, the noise will drive you crazy after a while, if it is as loud as the same until that pumps the air conditioning is.
2. When it’s very rainy or snowing
Remember, the AutoCamp custom Airstreams do not have stoves, ovens, or cooktops! If it’s snowing or raining, you’d be stuck with only the convection microwave. You couldn’t scramble an egg or boil water for some pasta…nothing. The last thing you’d want to do is rely on the fire pit! While it’s super cool and fun in good weather, it would be a total buzzkill in snow or – especially – rain.
3. When you want to watch TV
I can see the comments coming now: why would you watch TV when you are spending a lot of money to go to a super cool AutoCamp?! Well, sometimes it does rain! And sometimes there is football…Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday night… In the custom AutoCamp Airstreams, the living rooms are really lacking, including lack a TV. The only TV is in the bedroom. So, when I am done sitting around the fire pit and want to turn the TV on, I want a living room TV option.
4. When you have someone sleeping on the futon
The door to the bedroom on the Airstream does not close to either the ceiling or the floor, so it’s not fully private. The door in the X Suite is a regular door with full privacy.
Conclusion
As winter is approaching at most of the AutoCamp locations, it’s time to think about what conditions you want for your AutoCamp stay. There are 4 great reasons to choose the X Suite over the Airstream to keep you warm, comfortable, entertained, and more private.
