Airstreams, Tents, Suites, Cabins -Types of Accommodations at AutoCamp

Types of AccommodationS at AutoCamp

AutoCamp now has 6 properties open and 3 more coming by early 2024. The iconic Airstreams are present at all 6 locations and will be available at all upcoming locations. However, there is some variation between which types of camp suites AutoCamp provides at the various locations based on climate – and wildlife!

We’re going to review all the types of accommodations at AutoCamp. Note: “suite” is the term used by AutoCamp that encompasses all campsites and lodgings, from glamping tents up to the Airstreams.

Here are the types of accommodations. At the end, we’ll recommend which are your best option based on price, location, weather, size of your group.

Custom Airstreams

Custom Airstreams  are open year ’round at every open AutoCamp property. They are their signature type of accommodation.

Tour the Airstream at AutoCamp Joshua Tree. They are (nearly) identical at all locations. The ones at AutoCamp Russian River have minor differences, as they were the first ones built.

Basecamps

Basecamps are a “teepee” – or regular – style tent added to the Airstreams to make the kids sleep in tent! The Airstreams only allow 4 people. The Basecamp let’s you put a few more people on your campsite. They can either share your bathroom and shower or use the ones in the clubhouse.

Redwood Suites

There are only 2 Redwood Suites in the entire lineup of AutoCamp locations and types of accommodations at AutoCamp. They are at AutoCamp Russian River. They are are an Airstream with a wood-fired hot tub for 2!

X Suites

The X Suites are open year ’round, and we recommend staying in them for fall/winter, in particular. We LOVE LOVE LOVE the X Suite. It’s like a tiny house. Find out all the reasons why we are X Suite fans. They are open year ’round at every open AutoCamp property.

Luxury Glamping Tents

The Luxury Glamping Tents are not available year ’round and are not available at every property. Why? First, weather. They take the tents in during the deep cold and/or heavy snow months. Second, wildlife! There will be no tents at AutoCamp Asheville when it opens up because there is so much bear activity in the area. Our locations overview covers which properties have the luxury glamping tents.

Cabins

Cabins hold the most people – 6 – in part because of bunk beds. They are not offered at all locations. They combine the comfort of the X Suite with even more space, BUT the space is for 2 more people to sleep. It’s not functional space, really. Unless you have 6 people, choose the X Suite. Our locations overview covers which properties have the cabins.

Happier Camper

There is only 1 Happier Camper in the entire AutoCamp lineup, and it’s at AutoCamp Russian River. It’s smaller than the tent but has solid sides. There is no bathroom. You have to use the clubhouse for the bathroom and showers.

Airstream Bambi

The Airstream Bambi is coming – and it will be in Asheville, NC! This will be the first NON-custom, luxury Airstream in the AutoCamp lineup. Given that they are keeping the name BAMBI, we assume it will not be customized for AutoCamp. Their signature 31′ Airstream that exists at every location does not have an official Airstream name. So, in keeping the Bambi name, we believe it’s safe to assume it will be a typical production Bambi. We do not know yet if it will be a 16, 19, 20, or 22 foot floor plan.

The addition of the Airstream Bambi in the types of accommodations at AutoCamp was quite a surprise. It will be interesting to see which floor plan they choose and also if they will continue to offer new types of accommodations at AutoCamp in the future.

Conclusion

SO…what to choose?! Your decision will be based on:

  1. Price. Tents are cheapest (along with Happier Camper at Russian River). Airstreams and X Suites tend to be about the same. Cabins are most expensive.
  2. Location. The Airstreams in the dessert worry me. They are tin cans baking in the sun with no shade. I’d go with an X Suite if you’re going to Joshua Tree in the very hot months. Likewise, you might not want a tent in the colder locations during cold months.
  3. Weather. You cannot cook inside the Airstreams (except for the microwave). If it’s raining or snowing or super cold, do not choose an Airstream.
