AutoCamp Airstreams – What to Expect

Published on July 24, 2022 | Modified on January 12, 2023

As an Airstream super fan (but not owner), I wrote a detailed explanations of How AutoCamp Customized Airstreams Are Different from Other Airstream Models.

For those who are more…sane? typical? realistic?… I wanted to share what you can expect in the AutoCamp Airstream. While they give some details on their website, their site doesn’t do it justice. The Airstreams are very well thought out and provide all the basics you’ll need, and some you didn’t even expect. I’ll give you a tour and detailed explanation of what you’ll find in your Airstream. I’ll also review your patio and fire pit area!

Airstream Tour

First, have a big picture overview of what it looks like to walk into your Airstream for the first time (starring my 4 year old rescue, Rory! And yes, she’s named after Rory Gilmore! No, she has NO terrier in her…and YES, you guessed it, we’ve done her DNA!).

AutoCamp Airstream Walk Around / Tour

Now let’s look at details. We’ll go from living room to bathroom to kitchen to bedroom, just as we do in the video.

Living Room

While small, the living space is comfortable. On the far wall, there is a futon-type couch that is super comfortable for sitting. We didn’t put it “flat” for sleeping. If anyone has, please leave a comment and let us know if it was comfortable. There is an end table with an adorable USB rechargeable lantern. There are also USB re-charging ports. The book was a nice touch! You can also connect your phone to Bluetooth your audio throughout the the Airstream! Also, there was a small, very sturdy table.

On the wall with the door, there are a few pegs to hold jackets – and dog leash and harness. Under that, there is a place to keep your fire pit tools and wood in case you don’t want to leave them outside if there is a risk of rain. There is also a cute cube that is near the kitchen area. We found it to be super helpful to put Rory’s overnight bag, our snacks, and more.

Bathroom

The bathroom is amazing. No two ways about it! First, it’s HUGE. As in…bigger than it needs to be. If it were up to me, I’d make the bathroom 1 – 2′ shorter to give the living space more room. But what they’ve done with the bathroom is really fantastic:

  • real tile in the shower, on the floor, and on the backsplash
  • good towel racks and hooks
  • wonderful soaps, shampoos, and conditioner
  • a hair dryer (the text messaging people in Cape Cod said there wasn’t one!)
  • nice towels
  • two windows
  • vent (see below for a PRO TIP)
  • beautiful light fixtures
  • fantastic magnified mirror
  • super cool nightlight
  • impressive storage: shelf, drawer, and back of the enormous sink

Oh – residential toilet! No “foot pumps.” For anyone familiar with foot pump toilets, you’ll be delighted to find a high grade residential version. Nice job, AutoCamp!

Oddity: the bathroom faces front, so you’ll never want to open up those windows. There is a good roof vent.

PRO TIP: use the bathroom vent as an attic fan to suck out hot air and reduce use of air conditioning. You’re welcome!

Kitchen

The kitchen is impressive! The appearance is super minimal, but there is really everything you need!
The kitchen is split to the left and right. Once you enter through the door, to the left you will find the sink and countertop. Note: there is NO INDOOR COOKTOP. This is not typical of Airstreams, in general. This is a major difference between Autocamp’s Airstreams and commercially available Airstreams.

On the countertop is a

  • useful tray
  • silicone heat gloves
  • paper towels
  • dish towels
  • drain board
  • dish soap
  • sponge
  • a small butcher block that holds a wine opener/bottle opener, scissor, and pen

On the right side of the kitchen, behind the doors, you’ll find a closet where you can hang clothes. There are also towels to take to the beach and robes!

You’ll also find:

  • a convention oven/microwave
  • bowls and baking dish
  • grill tools
  • cast iron pan and steel trivet to put the hot pan on
  • fridge/freezer

Bedroom

The bedroom was fantastic! Again, it looks kind of sparse – and the storage is very minimal – but it is well appointed and laid out. It did have a

  • fantastic mattress
  • great windows
  • beautiful light fixtures
  • night stands with Bluetooth A (not the newer C) connections
  • plenty of outlets
  • good size and quality TV
  • the ability to walk comfortably on both sides of the bed

While there is a second air conditioner, I recommend not using it at night. It’s super loud. You’ll get plenty of cold air from the living room a/c. There are gaps above and below the door, so the air will flow in and also provide white noise.

The windows are awesome in the bedroom. The curtains are easy to use, but the shades can be very difficult. Maintenance is wonderful. Give them a call if you can get the shades in position. There is a skylight shade – just keep that closed.

Patio and Fire Pit

AutoCamp provides each Airstream a lovely outdoor area!

You’ll have a nice “porch” in front of your Airstream along with a “boot brush” to get debris off your shoes before you entire your Airstream. AutoCamp does also supplies a small brush and dust bin, as well.

In your patio area, you’ll find:

  • a lovely, modern table that can easily sit 4
  • a fire pit with grill grate
  • 2 chairs that might be able to fit 2 smaller people each

Remember, indoors, in your living room, you’ll find a few “Good Wood” logs to get you started and a poker.

“Good Wood”

Let’s talk about Good Wood for a moment. It’s supposedly “smoke free,” which is true – once it gets started. It does not smell like firewood, sadly. It doesn’t burn nearly as long as it is supposed to, unless you count red-hot embers as a fire. It’s super expensive – $20/sack. One sack will get you, supposedly, a 4 hour fire, I think it was? It was more like 2.5 hours. There is not enough fire starter in the bag, and I highly recommend bringing a wind resistant lighter with you along with fire starter cubes or kindling. We were told at the desk to not hesitate to call maintenance, and they would come light it. We did call both nights, and both guys were super sweet and lit us up. They spend too much time going around lighting fires.

What to Bring With You?

So, after all that, what should you bring with you? AutoCamp has their own list, but let me suggest a few additions:

  • wind resistant lighter with you along with fire starter cubes
  • be sure they actually sell beer/wine before arriving; we got to AutoCamp Cape Cod only to find out they didn’t have a license yet. We had to go back out to shop!
  • snacks!
  • WATER! You don’t want to use water from the faucet for coffee/tea. As I showed above, they give you two re-usable water bottles that you can refill from gallon jugs.
  • creamer for your coffee; they did give some single use creamers, or you can walk to the clubhouse for free coffee, tea, and granola. Me? I want coffee in my pjs before I emerge to face the public, and that means half and half for my coffee!

Food

Now, let’s talk about food. What should you bring? If you’re only there for a few nights, which is likely, it’s up to you. They offer free coffee, tea, and granola in the clubhouse at the Cape Cod location. I’m not sure about the others. Then, we were out during the day and ate lunch out, including a late lunch. For us, it wasn’t worth bringing ingredients for meals for just 2 nights. Had we stayed longer, we’d bring a cooler with meals planned. Again, consider your location. On Cape Cod in summer, you’re likely to be out sight-seeing or at the beach during the day, so you won’t be making lunches at the camp site. You might want to take sandwiches with you to the beach, though, as very few beaches have amenities like restaurants here on the Cape.

There was some food available at the clubhouse. The prices were very steep. You’ll likely not want to be purchasing at the clubhouse unless it’s really necessary. I’ll visit the clubhouse and the grounds in an upcoming article.
