AutoCamp Sequoia To Open With Bunk Rooms
Yup, it’s fiiiiinnnnaaalllly happened. AutoCamp Sequoia will open in late October.
What? Late October?
Siiigh. Yes.
Why all the drama?
Well, here are all the dates AutoCamp has given for the opening of Sequoia:
Originally scheduled for “late 2023”.
Then it was pushed back to Winter 2023/2024.
Updated AGAIN (July 2, 2023): Now scheduled for “MID 2024”.
Newsflash: late October is NOT “Mid 2024”.
Ultimately, though the sighs are because I was counting on them being open by September to take a trip to both Sequoia and AutoCamp Yosemite – the only open camp I have not visited yet. But late October is just too cold for my liking, so this trip is now postponed until probably Spring (maybe fall) of 2025. That’s pretty damned painful given it was supposed to be open in “late 2023”. They’ve missed the mark by an entire year. Sorry, AutoCamp, you cannot blame Covid or “supply” chain issues anymore.
So what do we now know about AutoCamp Sequoia?

New Lodging Type – Bunk Rooms!
Ok, now this is cool – they’re rolling out a new type of lodging we haven’t seen at the other locations: a Bunk Rooms!!
This is smart. This really fits a gap in the AutoCamp offerings. While the Airstreams supposedly fit/sleep 4 people, it would be insanely tight. Even with very small kids, there is nowhere to put things! These are not typical Airstreams – they have no storage!
AutoCamp Sequoia will also feature Cabins and Basecamps (reminder: a tent along with an Airstream). However, not all parents are comfortable putting their kids in a tent while locking themselves in a solid sided camper in a/c or heat and protected from animals.
It will be interesting to see how the Bunk Room is different than the Cabin, which itself has 2 bunks itself. In the photo, above, it’s clear this is one shared room. The Cabin has a bedroom with a door. On the outside of the door are 2 bunks. So, the Bunk Room clearly has less privacy than the Cabin.
Another observation: that is a bench seat with ONE snack tray! How is that “space for the whole family.” You 3 … eat outside while I eat inside! 🙂
Of course, AutoCamp focuses on living – and dining – outdoors. However, sometimes weather does not permit. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the room looks like.
The Bunk Room is described as “Featuring either one king or two queen beds, plus a set of twin bunk beds, our Bunk Rooms offer a classic boutique hotel experience, with space for the whole family.
The Double Bunk Room actually sleeps six, but note this write up: “Our most spacious room, our Double Queen Bunk room sleeps 6 and features two queen beds, plus twin-sized bunk beds. The private ensuite bathroom offers a walk-in shower and vanity area. Outside, relax with a glass of wine on your private patio, which includes a fire pit and dining area.”
NOTE: no kitchen! No seating for eating!
The King Bunk Room sleeps four: “Enjoy a cozy, boutique hotel experience in our King Room, which sleeps 4 and is perfect for those who need a little more space. Each room features a plush king bed and a twin-size bunk beds, perfect for kids. A private modern bathroom offers a walk-in shower and vanity area. Outside, relax with a glass of wine on your private patio, which includes a fire pit and dining area.”
Same room, just different bedding.
CONCLUSION: The Bunks are going to be one step above a tent. They offer climate control and a bathroom – which the tents don’t have – and solid sides. Other than that, it will be more similar to a tenting experience where everything is happening outside.
Other Standard Lodging
As is the case with the other open AutoCamp locations, Sequoia will also offer:
Location Details
AutoCamp Sequoia is located at 40457 Sierra Dr. Three Rivers, CA. That’s just about an 18 minute drive to the Sequoia National Park Foothills Visitor Center entrance. Great location!
There seem to be a few restaurants nearby:
This location was the site of a previous, traditional, campground called Sequoia Campground and Lodge.
This is good news. Like AutoCamp Cape Cod, AutoCamp Catskills, it will not be starting on bare naked land, like AutoCamp Joshua Tree and AutoCamp Zion. While the later are lovely spots, the vegetation is sparse. This means not just a lack of shade but less privacy. Cape Cod and Catskills – along with the first AutoCamp, Russian River – have very mature surroundings, making a far more “outdoorsy” feeling. Well, as outdoorsy as possible when surrounded by many dozens of Airstreams in very close proximity!
Some pictures of the former Sequoia Campground and Lodge seems to indicate there was a large open area in the middle surrounded by treed locations.
Conclusion
We have a lot more to learn about Sequoia, especially once we see the campground map. It’ll certainly have a pool, but will it have other amenities? We keep hoping AutoCamp will up the “restaurant” game, which is pretty much just heated foods.
Stay tuned. We’re on top of this, and we’ll be sharing what we learn when we learn it.
